The Crypt

The sculpture, Sound II, in the North isle of the crypt under Winchester Cathedral in Winchester, England is normally calf-to-knee deep in water. Note the waterlines on the camera-right wall. The artist, Anthony Gromley designed the sculpture for that environment. I arranged for access to the crypt before flying and expected water, but on April 27, 2006, the crypt was dry. It's a function of the water table.

Sandbar with a view from earlier times

Sandbar - Grand Cayman

North Sound, Grand Cayman, a place called "Sandbar." I've been going there for years and it's been one of my favorite places on earth. It's a sandbar of usually pristine sand under 3-4 feet of water. You enjoy the place standing up and walking around. On a sunny day, dip your head under the surface and see water colors graduating from a medium blue near the bottom to a light emerald green near the surface. The colors go to infinity. It's stunning. The ambient visual is enough, but stingrays will come for a snack of squid parts you bring from the grocery store. A few years ago, there would be a few other people, but you could enjoy the place in a quiet solitude. Now, Sandbar is no secret and boats make big business ferrying cruise ship passengers there.

Bob Knuth, underwater photographer, enters a swimthru at Neptune's Wall divesite, Grand Cayman. There are also many "peerthrus" on this site; they look like a swimthru but aren't big enough for a body and tank.
